Asian Domain registration service in china
A classic scam and one that it is easy for an inexperienced website owner to fall for. I have seen this one as a written letter and personally torn it up in front of the recipient. No domain company anywhere EVER looks to see if ANY variation of a domain you want to register has already been registered. It is none of their business.
There is no client wanting to register all these variations of your domain name. There is a scammer, hoping you will fall for their story and send them lots of money so that they can register the domains for you. Ignore these scammers.
This was sent to me by a colleague who initially replied. You can see the scammers subsequent replies below.
(It’s very urgent, Please transfer this email to your CEO or appropriate person, thanks)

BTW in response to Rosetrees, I once got chatting to some Chinese students. Apparently, when they do English lessons in China they have to choose an English name for themselves, which they then use in all the lessons and other English communications.

I received what sounds like the same email as Lane. The one I received requested both ‘received’ and ‘read’ receipts. I considered replying, but did a search for “dsg-net.com.cn” first (the return email domain)and found this website.
It is interesting to note that “dsg-net.com” (as opposed to “dsg-net.com.cn”) appears to be a legitimate US website… It is odd that an organization that claims to be protecting web identities would have such an address.

Got the same email from Bruce Zhu. Since it came through my site’s contact page and wasn’t directly emailed, it looked legit. I replied that I have all the domains I need and that other company didn’t really need my permission if they wanted to register the others. So I didn’t fall for the scam, but…
I have been under what I consider a spam attack (about 1 per day that gets through the filter) since my reply. And they’re far more convincing than most and I suspect most people would fall for them. The email addresses are spoofed to look legit, the spelling is perfect, and they have htm attachments full of trojans (scanned on virustotal). The timing could be a coincidence, but I suspect replying to “Bruce Zhu” was a mistake. Do yourselves a favor and DO NOT EVEN REPLY TO THESE EMAILS, just let it go…

Another approach this time from Steve Wu.
(Letter to Head of Brand Business or CEO, thanks)
Dear Sir or Madam,
We are the department of Asian Domain Registration Service in China. Here I have something to confirm with you. We formally received an application on August 14, 2012 that a company claimed idoo Investment Ltd were applying to register “mhpa” as their Net Brand and some mhpa Asian countries top-level domain names through our firm.
Now we are handling this registration, and after our initial checking, we found the name were similar to your company’s, so we need to check with you whether your company has authorized that company to register these names. If you authorized this, we would finish the registration at once. If you did not authorize, please let us know within 7 workdays, so that we could handle this issue better. After the deadline we will unconditionally finish the registration for idoo Investment Ltd. Looking forward to your prompt reply.
Best Regards,
Steve Wu

Tony Cui contacted me in 2010. I fell for it and purchased 15 domains. Bruce Zhu recently contacted me with the same pitch. When I told him I already owned the domains, he told me that they hadn’t been registered. I sent him the certificates. He told me they were fake, and sent me an “authentic” one. It was also in chinese and tell the difference. He told me he’d link the asian sites to my website before any money had to be paid, because I told him that I didn’t trust him. I told him I was skeptical and he persisted. Why? If somebody else wanted to buy the domains…sell them. Why contact me?

Just received a variation of the email from “Koma Wong” – email is: koma@tsnet-now.com.
The email began:
“We are the department of Asian Domain registration service in china, have something to confirm with you. We formally received an application on December 28, 2011. One company which self-styled “Haser investment Ltd” were applying to register “redacted” as Network Brand and following domain names… After our initial checking, we found the name were similar to your company’s, so we need to check with you whether your company has authorized that company to register these names. If you authorized this, we will finish the registration at once. If you did not authorize, please let us know within 7 workdays, so that we will handle this issue better. Out of the time limit we will unconditionally finish the registration for “Haser investment Ltd”.
It seemed dubious, but I bit, and merely responded that they were not authorized. A few hours later, they responded:
“Many thanks for your confirmation. As soon as receiving the application of “Haser investment Ltd”, we checked and found “redacted” is your company’s registered trademark. So we inform you also that’s reason why we sent email to you. But you should know that The domain names registration is open in China, “Haser investment Ltd” has right to apply for the available domain names. For this reason “Haser investment Ltd” is also licit applicant and we have no right to reject them. You only own the preferential rights to register them. In addition, please inform us your company’s decision of this issue. If your company do need to register those Domains in China please contact us in time, then we’ll inform you how to register. Or else we think it as your waiver. Thanks for your understanding.”
I am now responding that I will forward this email to the IC3 and to the Chinese government. He should be sure to send me postcards from prison. 🙂

Got mine today, with the company “Singnal” accused of trying to register my company name. They sent the website link as an image, but the website does actually exist So some credence to this. As does the phone number – phone it and someone answers but without any company name given. I suggest we set-up a mass fax spam mission to them.

I received one of those emails as well. The text of the email sounded very official. From the text alone it could be real or a scam, and no clue convincing me either way.
The email was sent from the domain tsnet-now.com, when I did further research on that domain things started looking a bit fishy. The domain was registered less than two weeks ago. And a search on Google for the domain name turned up nothing useful. Just a couple of websites tracking domain registrations.
Another thing I found fishy was that the email was sent with an empty to field.
It was only as I started searching for fragments of the contents of the email that I found this page.
Anybody have any idea about how frequently these scammers change their domain name?

They must be trying to fill a quota. I heard about this one recently from a lot of people.
Got my own one today. Replied with the suggestion that he should go play on Tiananmen Square the next parade. Let’s see how they react/whether it’s automatic or not.
